Shen Xun, Professor in Biophysics and Supervisor for Ph.D.student

Shen Xun, Professor in Biophysics and Supervisor for Ph.D.student.

Born in 1941 in Chongqing, China. After 6 year’s study, Graduated from Tsinghua University (Beijing, China) as a physicist in 1965. Further study on Radiation Biology in Bartholomew’s Medical College, London University, London during the period of 1973-1975. As visiting scientist, worked in the Institute for Biophysics, Giessen University, Germany in 1987.11-1989.4. Promoted to Associated professor in 1986 and became full professor in 1992 in the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Used to be served as a member of the Editorial Board for International Journal of Radiation Biology during the period of 1983-1990. Served as the member of Scientific Program Committee for the 11th International Congress on Radiation Research (Edinburgh, 1987) and the member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the 11th International Congress on Photobiology (Kyoto, 1992). Now, serving as the National Committee member of China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Vice-President and General Secretary for Biophysical Society of China, member of the Task Force for Capacity Build, International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB), member of the Commission on Biological Physics, International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).

3. Main research subjects

3.1. Signal transduction for the stimulated respiratory burst in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes.

  1. How intracellular calcium regulates the fMLP- or PMA-stimulated respiratory burst in neutrophils?
  2. How cytoskeleton regulates the fMLP- stimulated respiratory burst in neutrophils.
  3. The role of phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase in the fully activation of phospholipase C (PLC) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathways.
  4. Interaction between the PI3K signaling and the PLC signaling.

3.2. Signal transduction in transferring receptor-mediated cellular iron uptake

  1. Kinetics of transferrin receptor-mediated iron uptake in erythroleukemic cells
  2. The endocytosis, exocytosis and recycling of transferring-transferrin receptor complex.
  3. The role played by reactive oxygen species (ROS) as a second messenger in transferrin receptor-mediated iron uptake.

3.3. Regulation of gene expression

  1. Study on some disease-related gene expression regulated by reactive oxygen using Nox-1 gene-trasfected cells.
