Objectives. Regenerating planarians are used as a model test-system to study the influence of various physical and chemical factors. Amputation of a part of the body is accompanied by the release of serotonin from the damaged nerves, which initiates the chain of events leading to the complete re-growth of the planarian's body. We have shown earlier the possibility of stimulating as well as inhibiting proliferation of neoblasts by weak (compared to that of Earth's) combined magnetic fields (CMF) [1]. The goal of this work was to study the combined action of exogenous serotonin and CMF tuned to parametric resonance for calcium (Ca2+-CMF) and potassium ions (K+-CMF) according to the theory of the magnetic parametric resonance in biosystem [2].
Methods. The quantitative measurements of blastema re-growth by 3-th day of regeneration was performed using the in vivo computer morphometry. It is based on recording in vivo the photocontrast between old (pigmented) and new (transparent) parts of planarian's body. The system of on-line computer image analysis with special software was used to calculate the ratio of blastema area to whole body area as a quantitative parameter of regeneration as average (n=30) for the following groups 1) without any influence, 2) exposed to the (Ca2+-CMF) or (K+-CMF), 3) with serotonin added immediately after sectioning, 4) with simultaneous application of both factors.
Results. It has been found that 3 day exposure of regenerating planarians to the Ca2+-CMF accelerated the re-growth of blastema by 305 %. Almost the same increase by 306 % have been obtained by addition of 10-6 M serotonin immediately after sectioning without application of the Ca2+-CMF. The activation of the re-growth of blastema by 455 % was detected after application of both factors. The exposure of planaria to K+-CMF suppressed blastema re-growth by 255 %. The inhibitory influence of K+-CMF was abolished in the presence of 10-6 M serotonin.
The data presented here and also obtained earlier clearly indicate the possibility of regulating the processes of regeneration with the use of weak magnetic fields. Non-additive character of the joined action of CMF and serotonin allows us to propose the existence of the same routs in the mechanism by which these two factors affect the morphogenesis.
