INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF BIOPHYSICS
Yearly IIB Conference 2001

The yearly conference of the members of the International Institute of Biophysics (IIB) took place on August 24th to 31st, with presentations of the results of last year‘s work. After the election of two new members from Japan, the IIB has now 22 members in 12 countries, who presented their lectures in the rooms of the splendid new institute building at the former NATO missile lanching site. In addition, Barbara Köhler from the Gesamthochschule Kassel who had started the work for her PhD dissertation several years ago in Popp´s group in Kaiserslautern, presented the results of her recently finished dissertation. She confirmed her earlier finding that there are significant differences between the eggs of caged hens and eggs of free range hens.

After some opening remarks on Friday evening by the president of the IIB, the honorary member Fanchon Fröhlich, the widow of the late Herbert Fröhlich, the president of the IIB, Jiin-Ju Chang and the vice-presidents Lev Beloussov, Roeland van Wijk and Fritz-Albert Popp, the conference started on Saturday morning. The following lectures were presented (Click titles for access to papers).

Saturday, August 25.

  • Ke-Hsueh Li: Fundamentals of Coherence.

  • Franco Musumeci: Coherent Electron States and Photoinduced Luminescence from Biological Systems.

  • Xun Shen: The fLMP-Stimulated Chemiluminescence in Whole Blood.

  • Vladimir Voiekov: Analysis of photon emission from human blood and its sedimentation properties argue for its cooperative and non-linear behavior.

Sunday, August 26

Monday, August 27

  • Barbara Köhler: The influence of housing systems, fresh grass and sunlight on the delayed luminescence of hen eggs.

  • Jiin-Ju Chang: Low level and sun light-induced photon emission from chickens.

  • Michael Lipkind: Analysis of the Photon Emission Signal from Virus-Infected Cell Cultures.

  • Rajendra Bajpai: Comparison of Photon Bursts Spontaneously Emitted by Neural and Viral-Infected Avian Cells.

Tuesday, August 28

On Wednesday, August 29, the conference was interrupted by a boat trip on the Rhine from Rüdesheim to Koblenz.

Thursday, August 30

  • Takahiro Makino: Spectral Transition of Biophotons and Chemiluminescence in Plant Cells.

  • Mr. Matsuura: Cell Death and Photon Emission of Melanoma Cells.

  • Andreas Herzog/Fritz-Albert Popp: Experimental Evidence of Squeezed Light in Biological Systems.

Friday, August 31

  • John Swain: Latest Results on Cooled High Quantum Efficiency Avalanche Photodiodes.

  • Rajendra Bajpai: The Physical Basis of Life.

The conference was followed by the first IIB summer school on "Biophotons in Life Sciences" given by the members of the IIB on September 2-8, with 16 participants from the USA, Great Britain, Brazil, Germany, Slovenia, South Korea, and India. The IIB plans to hold a summer school every year.
